Dermatologist Recommended Skin Care Routine for 50s
As individuals reach their 50s, their skin often requires more targeted care due to changes such as dryness, fine lines, and loss of elasticity. To retain healthy skincare habits, here is my expert dermatologist-recommended skincare routine:
Dermatologist Recommended Skin Care Routine for 50s
- Hydration: As we age, our skin becomes drier. This is because our bodies produce less hyaluronic acid, a substance that helps to retain moisture in the skin. To keep your skin hydrated, look for skincare products that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.
- Sun protection: Sun protection is essential for people of all ages, but it is especially important for people in their 50s and older. This is because the skin's ability to repair itself decreases with age, making it more susceptible to sun damage. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to your face and neck every day, even on cloudy days.
- Anti-aging ingredients: There are a number of anti-aging ingredients that can help to improve the appearance of the skin in the 50s. Some popular anti-aging ingredients include retinol, vitamin C, and niacinamide.
Here is a sample skincare routine for people in their 50s:
Morning:
- Cleanse with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. We recommend the gentle cleanser RE-JUV® Hydrating Vitamin C Cleanser. Meticulously crafted for those cherishing their mature skin. This gentle yet potent cleanser, with the revitalizing essence of Vitamin C, seamlessly refines your skin's texture, gracefully diminishing wrinkles and shielding your skin from environmental stressors with each use.
- Apply a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.
- Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Evening:
- Cleanse with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
- Apply a toner or serum that contains anti-aging ingredients, such as retinol, Vitamin C, or niacinamide.
- Apply a richer moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.
- You may also want to add an exfoliant to your routine once or twice weekly. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells and reveal the brighter, healthier skin underneath. Be sure to choose a gentle exfoliator that is suitable for sensitive skin.
Weekly:
Use a soothing and hydrating mask for an aging skincare routine. We highly recommend the RE-JUV® Age-Defying Bamboo Charcoal Pore Minimizing Masque.
- Use a mask (Weekly, Optional): Use soothing and hydrating masks with ingredients like oatmeal, aloe, or honey. Avoid masks with harsh exfoliants or irritating ingredients. We recommend the RE-JUV® Age-Defying Bamboo Charcoal Pore Minimizing Masque. It gently exfoliates, deeply cleanses impurities, hydrates to reveal smoother skin, and minimizes and unclogs pores, leaving the skin supple and glowing. It minimizes blemishes and dark spots and brightens the complexion to promote a radiant glow.
Additional Tips:
Here are some additional skincare tips, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, for an aging skin care plan:
- Protect your skin from the sun
- Forget about indoor tanning
- Apply moisturizer every day
- Wash away dirt and grime twice a day
- Stop smoking
- Eat healthy foods
- Get enough sleep
- Drink water
